Methods:
Fall leaf senescence and abscission are monitored at the two scaffold towers located at soil moisture microclimate stations 2 and 4. We have identified a variety of species at the elevational extremes within the Coweeta basin for this yearly monitoring project.

There are 10 branches marked and numbered as you ascend each tower. These are the same branches used in the spring leaf phenology measurements; the marked branch includes the whole branch until it reaches the main trunk. The leaves on the marked branches are those you use to make the leaf phenology assessment. During the fall we assess the percentage color change of leaves (percentage of leaf area that has changed from its original color) as well as the percentage of leaf loss relative to the original coverage on that branch. Assessments are made weekly until 100% leaf loss is observed. The fall leaf phenology measurements begin in late September and usually last until late November.

Prior to climbing the scaffold tower, please make sure all guide wires are properly fastened and that the plumb bob is hanging parallel to the tower to assure safe tower conditions. Always have at least one hand and one foot safely secured to the tower rails and steps when climbing and descending. Also, make sure you enjoy the view at the top!
